Enrolled Nurse – Paediatric Intensive Care Unit (PICU)

• Assist with the admission, care, and discharge of critically ill paediatric patients in the ICU.
• Administer medications, treatments, and other nursing interventions as prescribed by medical professionals and supervised by Registered Nurses.
• Monitor and record patients’ vital signs, including heart rate, respiratory rate, blood pressure, and oxygen levels, reporting any abnormalities to the Registered Nurse or doctor.
• Provide basic nursing care, such as feeding, bathing, and changing dressings, ensuring patient comfort and hygiene.
• Assist in the use of medical equipment, including ventilators, monitors, and infusion pumps, under the supervision of a Registered Nurse.
• Observe patients for changes in condition and immediately alert senior nursing staff to any signs of distress or deterioration.
• Provide emotional support and comfort to both the child and their family members during their stay in the ICU.
• Participate in daily ward rounds, updating the healthcare team on patient status and progress.
• Maintain a clean, sterile environment in accordance with infection control protocols to prevent hospital-acquired infections.
• Ensure adherence to safety protocols in the ICU to protect patients, staff, and visitors.
• Handle waste disposal and sharps management in compliance with hospital standards.
• Work closely with the multidisciplinary team, including doctors, Registered Nurses, physiotherapists, and other healthcare professionals, to ensure holistic care.
• Communicate clearly and compassionately with parents or guardians about the child’s condition and required care measures, as directed by senior staff.
• Document all care provided accurately in patient records and maintain confidentiality.
• Stay updated on best practices in paediatric critical care and ICU protocols by attending relevant training and development programs.
• Participate in hospital training sessions, team meetings, and quality improvement initiatives to enhance personal and team performance.

• Enrolled Nursing Certificate (SANC Registered as an Enrolled Nurse).
• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience, with at least 1 year in an ICU, paediatric, or neonatal setting preferred. Prior experience in a Paediatric ICU will be advantageous.
• Compassionate and caring attitude towards children and their families.
• Strong observational and assessment skills, with the ability to recognize signs of clinical deterioration.
• Ability to work in a high-stress, fast-paced environment while maintaining accuracy and attention to detail.
• Good communication skills for interacting with paediatric patients, families, and healthcare professionals.
• Proficiency in basic nursing procedures, including administering medication, managing IV lines, and infection control.
• Ability to work well as part of a multidisciplinary team.
• Shift-based work, including nights, weekends, and public holidays, as required in an ICU setting.
• Exposure to critical care environments, dealing with sensitive and emotional situations involving children and their families.
