Purpose of the job:Produce regular, good quality multimedia, predominantly geared toward online audiences in service of our institutional and operational communication needs and objectives.
Position Mandate, Mission, and Nature of the Function:MSF Southern Africa’s Communication Department is mandated to raise awareness and understanding about medical humanitarian issues and the organisation’s values and work among the South African society in support of mobilising influence and resources (advocacy, fundraising and recruitment).
The Department pursues this objective through awareness raising actions, traditional news media liaison, online social media network engagement and communication projects. At the heart of all these actions lies the capacity to develop messages and content.
The mandate of the Digital Multimedia Officer is to drive the regular production of MSF’s in-house design and video productions, predominantly geared toward online audiences.
The content outputs will serve MSF’s institutional and operational communication needs.The Digital Multimedia Officer will undertake script-writing, narrative development, filming and video production to develop and deliver strong visual stories about the people and places where MSF undertakes medical humanitarian action.
The position requires an experienced visual storyteller with proven experience as video producer and editor, a multimedia designer and writer for online audiences, mainly through social media channels but also for news sites or documentary projects.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assists the Digital Multimedia Specialist to develop and implement visual storytelling to meet MSF Southern Africa’s objectives for a range of internal and external audiences through a variety of productions drawing on capacity to script-write, film and edit, photograph & design communication material.
- This will include shooting and selecting visuals/photographs, and producing graphics, gifs/animations, short- and long-form videos for online/social channels and internal communications.
- Interviewing MSF international mobile staff (IMS) on their return from projects; transcribing and uploading these interviews to a database; and producing multimedia content from these interviews for use on our digital channels.
Content production:
- Under the guidance of the Digital Multimedia Specialist, the Digital Multimedia Officer will develop and manage video projects from inception to delivery – this includes shooting, editing and producing compelling video and multimedia content that is timely, relevant and engages our audiences across multiple platforms, in particular short format content for social media.
- Provide support to MSF Southern Africa Section departments by developing and producing design, video/multimedia content and video-based marketing or awareness raising materials (videos for training, presentation, events, etc.).
- Responsible for repurposing or re-editing existing international MSF content for an Southern African audience and the development of evergreen content.
- Provide input on multimedia strategy and video content and dissemination in line with MSF Southern Africa communications strategy.
Skills transfer, management and reporting:
- Act as technical referent for MSF Southern Africa as a skilled and proficient user of the Adobe creative suite (Illustrator, Premier Pro/Final Cut, Photoshop and In Design) and trains colleagues in some of these tools.
- Act as a technical referent on video production (standards, trends etc.).
- Responsible for video and design equipment management.
- Responsible for the maintenance of the Multimedia Story Library by regularly uploading interview transcriptions.
- Assist with uploading of content to the Media Database.
- Compiles quarterly reports on the performance of content created within the Input Team.
Networking:
- Liaison with MSF communications colleagues internationally and the other digital and video specialist units.
- Works with the Multimedia Specialist to forge links and relationships with other multimedia content producers.
Support:
- Supports Field HR in the debriefing of MSF Southern Africa fieldworkers to generate video/multimedia content.
- Supports the Communication team with:
- IMS content production.
- Editing and re-purposing of multimedia from the Movement.
- Development of short-form videos for campaigns and evergreen content.
- Provides ad hoc support to all Section departments for internal multimedia production.
- Supports the Digital Multimedia Producer with filming or shooting on project visits and/or in an emergency response.
Requirements
Technical:
- Bachelor degree or higher in audiovisual technologies or equivalent.
- At least four years of professional experience – multimedia production, including filming, photo production, editing and script-writing.
- Experience in multimedia or web-based interactive productions.
- A robust photography and film or multimedia journalism portfolio.
- Proven experience in social media and digital communication.
- A good judgment of ethical aspects of communication, copyright and legal aspects.
- Experience within a facilities/post-production house.
- Proven writing abilities and capacity to adapt style to suit a range of audiences.
- Mac environment.

Preferable:
- Preferable field experience as multimedia journalist, filmmaker, video producer or mobile journalism practitioner.
- Experience in digital marketing environments or working on multimedia design and animation projects.
Terms and Conditions of Employment:
- Initial 12-month contract.
- Monthly Salary; R30 888 - 53
- 13th Cheque in November.
